5 Conniving Men Charged For Malibu Fires

On Thursday 5 men were charged with felony counts for intentionally starting the fire in Malibu that burned over a dozen homes. Arson investigators have found that at the origin of the fire there was food wrappers and fire logs that could of possibly started the fires. While fabricating this plan, these men forgot one thing. They openly walked into a nearby store around the same time the fires happened, leading the arson investigators to them. At the pinnacle of this fire, 60-mile-an-hour Santa Ana were not helping the situation. This fire was the first of a series of 24 outbreaks. These fires took many days to put out, and were very divisive. When it when they were finally done it completely charred 4,900 acres of capacious land and burned 53 homes.
The first time I hear about these fires, I simply thought that it was mother natures way of saying to stop building so many homes, but then when I heard that some one caused some of these fires, I was shocked. I thank the arson investigators for looking for these suspects and treating this case like a felony not just another coincidence. I think that the police need to usurp these suspects in jail, and make them stay there for all the suffering they caused. These fires have scarred many people for life, and most don't even have homes to go back to.

The Waiting Room

This comedy/satire that we just recently completed, titled The Waiting Room was a story about three women that lived in completely different time periods. This whole story revolves around Wanda, Victoria, and Forgiveness From Heaven. Wanda is a modern girl from “jersey” who is flirtatious, ballsy, and has had six breast implants. Victoria is an English Victorian woman that wears many layers. She is very witty, proper, and is diagnosed with hysteria. She is tightly corseted and is stripped of most of her rights, by her loving husband. Forgiveness From Heaven is a wealthy Chinese woman, who can be portrayed as “ditsy.” She is always happy and has an “enduring smile.” She binds her feet in order to please her husband.

The ironic part of this play is that these three different women all do something to their bodies to make them more “beautiful,” but in the end they all realize that they don’t need to enhance their appearance to please others. This is just one of the key messages of this play, but the most important. Another important message that I got out of this is that you need to rely on other people to help you through rough times.

The point that Lisa Loomer (the author) is trying to get across to the public is that there are many people that do so many things to their bodies to make themselves look more “beautiful” but all their really doing is harming their well-being. This also goes to show that even back then, women were changing things about them, regardless its bad for their health

These three characters have evolved greatly from the beginning. When we first started this play, all these women met while waiting for the doctor to fix their numerous problems. Wanda has a tumor in her breast because one of her implants has leaked. Victoria is convinced that her ovaries were going to come out of her, due to the corsets and many layers of clothes that she wore daily. Forgiveness’s toe fell off because she would continuously bind her feet. While she was doing so her pinky toe accidentally fell off and she treats it like that happens all the time. The ironic part is that in the end, they all give up trying to impress others and in return gaining more freedom.

This play also shows how the government plays a role in the peoples health. Ken and Larry are two other important characters in this play, and represent the government. Ken is a FDA agent, and Larry is the vice president of a major drug company. Throughout this whole play, these two men are discussing new cures of cancer. The only thing is that greed and money plays a huge part in their conversations. During all their conversations, it seemed like they were just gambling with the patient’s lives. This says a lot about how Lisa Loomer thought about how the government plays a role in the American health. I also notices that all their conversations were about business and trying to persuade the other person into using/or not using a new drug. I personally don’t think they play that big of a role in the overall message. I think that the outcome of this play would have been the same even without these characters.

Well I thought that the ending of this play seemed kind of weird. This play ended with Forgiveness dancing and just letting everything go, and not caring about all the problems she is still faced with. It most seemed like the author was meaning to write an ending, but forgot. If I could re-write this section I probably would have talked about their life after meeting each other. Although in some ways I do like how the ending was written. It is very open-ended, and allows for many conversations. On the flip side it might be a little too open-ended and doesn’t address the issues that the characters still have to go through.

In conclusion, I thought this was a very well written play, and made you think, and allowed for multiple discussions.

Fairy Tales and Gender Roles

After reading this article titled "Fairy Tales and Gender Roles" it really opened my eyes to how these beauty images are depicted. Researchers from Purdue university did a study on how "princesses achieve vast riches simply because their beauty makes them special". This puts a very bad image in many young women, who read these fairy tales. Suddenly little girls think they need to be skinny, and have big boobs to be beautiful. Someone in our class made a great comment saying, "all the women in these stories are getting rescued by the big, muscular men from danger." The most important aspect of this article is that the media is attacking children. Though, there has been few attempts and bringing justice to "beauty" being skinny, ditsy, and perfect. The most recent attempt was Shrek. "In the recent film "Shrek," which follows a traditional fairy tale format, the beautiful maiden lives happily ever after when she is transformed into an ogre." This shows that you can still live happily ever after even if you aren't "beautiful." The most disturbing thing about the media attempting to attack the youth of America is that its not just subtle, in one story, there were 114 beauty references for women. This was like i said before the most astonishing about this article. Anyway, if you would like to read this article for your self copy and past the link below into the url bar, so you can understand for your self how "eye opening" our world is.

The collision of "Beauty" and "Health"

We have just finished reading two separate articles, but on the same topic. The first article of text we read was called "In the eye of the beholder." This was basically saying that we have a global standard that is highly influenced by the western region (the U.S.). And to be "beautiful" we has to be skinny. The second reading was titled "Morality of fat." The most important message I got out of this article was that there are many people that want to be skinny and be "beautiful" but loose determination or will.
I personally thought that the first article was a lot easier to understand. My favorite quote that came out of this text was "There is a global standard of beauty, and it is one which is very western influenced." The reason that I thought this was such an important quote was that our whole conversation was based around this one quote. It really made me think, not only is it messed up that we have to convince people to be underweight here but now other nations are following our horrible example. Some good points that were made in our conversation was that even though there are people that feel a need to do whatever it takes to be skinny (i.e. anorexia, bulimia) there are people who initially don't start out with these thoughts in their heads but the media puts them in there subconsciously. We all made great points about this difficult topic and it really made me think that, we have a serious problem on out plate and if we don't do something about it soon, I think it will be the leading cause of death.
The second text we had to read was titled, "Morality of fat". This one was kind of hard to figure out the main concept of this one, the idea that I got from this was that that many people thought that by trading one kind of fat for a nother, for instance "If they dont have the burger, they are going to have the fries." I agree with what this article is saying, I think the main reason that people do this is because they are simoky uneducated and have no guidence to tell them whats right from wrong.
