After reading this article titled "Fairy Tales and Gender Roles" it really opened my eyes to how these beauty images are depicted. Researchers from Purdue university did a study on how "princesses achieve vast riches simply because their beauty makes them special". This puts a very bad image in many young women, who read these fairy tales. Suddenly little girls think they need to be skinny, and have big boobs to be beautiful. Someone in our class made a great comment saying, "all the women in these stories are getting rescued by the big, muscular men from danger." The most important aspect of this article is that the media is attacking children. Though, there has been few attempts and bringing justice to "beauty" being skinny, ditsy, and perfect. The most recent attempt was Shrek. "In the recent film "Shrek," which follows a traditional fairy tale format, the beautiful maiden lives happily ever after when she is transformed into an ogre." This shows that you can still live happily ever after even if you aren't "beautiful." The most disturbing thing about the media attempting to attack the youth of America is that its not just subtle, in one story, there were 114 beauty references for women. This was like i said before the most astonishing about this article. Anyway, if you would like to read this article for your self copy and past the link below into the url bar, so you can understand for your self how "eye opening" our world is.
